320 Ploughing is Hard Work

“Break up your unploughed ground and do not sow among thorns” (Jeremiah 4:3).

This hard ground that I’m supposed to plough up, I have plenty of that. Undisciplined flesh, food, laziness, failure to persevere, my fear of giving You full control. Habits that seem set in concrete to me. But this reads as if I am to break it up and You know I’ve tried and failed so often over the years that I no longer believe I can ever do it.

Sure, I know the right answer in my head: You don’t expect me to; You have already done it when You took my place on the cross; it is all of Your power, not mine. So why can’t I appropriate this? All my life You have given me the good shepherds to guide me (3:15) but it hasn’t made a lasting difference.

You are only looking at half the verse. You are sowing your efforts among thorns. Whatever is not of faith is sin (Romans 14:23) because of the effect it has on you, and the biggest thorn in the paddock of your life is unbelief. These things you know are true, wonderfully true. You love My Word and know that. But that big thorn bush prevents you from believing it. Why? Because you are looking at yourself instead of Me. When you do that you will always see failure and faith will disappear.

Don’t be discouraged. We are working on this together and I have no intention of failing. I will complete the work I have begun in you (Philippians 1:6). Your part is to keep looking at Me, what I have done for you. Guard your lips, monitor your thoughts, replace any negative words with what I have declared concerning you. Each day you pick up the sword of the Spirit which is My Word (Ephesians 6:17). So use it on yourself as well as the enemy and faith will grow because faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17).
