321 An Unbreakable Covenant

“Then (Jeremiah) said, ‘Ah, Sovereign Lord, how completely You have deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying, “You will have peace”, when the sword is at our throats’” (Jeremiah 4:10).

The thought that You would deliberately deceive Your people is unthinkable! You had a covenant relationship with these people. How could You break that? What about the covenant we have with You? Can that be broken by You too?

If there is a cancer in your body, does it do any good to declare that it isn’t there? To remove the cancer is life-giving, an act of love. My covenant was with the descendants of Abraham as a nation, and that will never be breached. But a point comes when those who would destroy it from within must be removed in order to save the nation. Didn’t it happen in the wilderness (Numbers 14:22,23)? So it was here with the exile to Babylon.

Aren’t things different now though? We each individually have to enter into Your covenant, so if through our disobedience You were to destroy us, what is left of Your promises?

You have got it wrong. I have not made a covenant with you, I made it with My Son as your representative and you became part of it when you surrendered control of your life and invited Him in. Be assured, that can never be broken. But in My love I will always work to bring you into a deeper relationship with Me, and I can use even the ungodly world and the false prophets of your day to do that if necessary.
