346 When God’s Word is Lifeless

“You have let go of the commands of God and are holding onto the traditions of men” (Mark 7:8). “Their worship of Me is useless, because they teach man-made rules as if they were doctrines” (CJB).

In this passage Jesus quotes Isaiah 29:13 and called the Jewish leaders hypocrites. That sounds pretty serious. It is very easy to condemn the Jews of Jesus’ day and even of today for keeping traditions that have been handed down to them from past teachers instead of obeying what You actually said. But I have the feeling that we often fall into the same error.

Spiritual life can only come through My Spirit. Even My Word that has been preserved for you can be a dead book if He is not speaking. If you come to it hungry and thirsty for truth He will feed you with the bread of life (Matthew 5:6). But if you read it with your rational mind, you may grow in knowledge of My ways but it will not communicate life to your spirit. Rather it will communicate condemnation because there will be no power to obey it. My Word is only “sharp and powerful” when it is wielded by the Holy Spirit. Taken up and used by a rational mindset, it can bring error, or even death, to those who hear.

Likewise, true worship is only acceptable in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). My Spirit is given to My children to make this possible. Come to worship depending on Him and I will meet you there.
