347 Unclean! Unclean!

“‘Don’t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him unclean’ … (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean)” (Mark 7:18,19).

This is confusing. I understand that the sacrificial system given to Your people was a temporary measure until the pure blood of Your Son’s sinless body replaced it. But I don’t see where the food regulations have been replaced or rendered obsolete.

The ritual laws were given to preserve the body. They kept My people healthy in the conditions of their day. But in response to the Jewish leaders who were so diligent in keeping these laws but were nevertheless unclean within, Jesus was pointing His listeners to what “clean” really means.

It is from deep in the soil that a tree draws its nourishment, and the health of the plant depends on what its roots can access. Likewise, the direction of your life is determined by the condition of your heart. If your heart is drawing its food from the presence of My Holy Spirit, you will be motivated into a life of godliness. But the natural heart can only be filled by rational thinking, imbibing the world’s attitudes and morals, and the result is a life moving in sinful ways. You are then unclean, unable to come into My presence and ultimately will come under judgment with the evil one who has authored it.

So take care to guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23).
