357 Knowing God’s Word

“Jesus replied, ‘Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?’” (Mark 12:24).

You drew my attention to this verse but I’ve got bogged down in seeking to understand it correctly. From what I can discover, the word “know” here is rather a superficial knowledge, yet surely these religious leaders knew the Scriptures. Their whole life was immersed in it. They could recite whole books by heart. And “the power of God”? You had worked in their history is so many miraculous ways.

Revelation is having My Word applied to your heart as it relates to you. It is important doctrinally to look at the context of a verse, to seek to understand what it meant to the hearers, but when you are listening for My voice, My Spirit can bring an understanding to your heart that is specific to your situation. That’s why My Word has power no matter what limitations translations put on it. So, what did it say to your heart when you read it?

Because the Bible is so precious to me, I felt that I had a good knowledge of it, but Your power…. that’s where I fail to appropriate what You are telling me. It is hearsay and head knowledge to me, and I do not stand on it with confidence. Every conflicting observation or occurrence causes me to lose my footing. But from this verse it seemed to me that You were saying both are vital to keep us in the truth.

That is My message for you. Put your feet firmly on My Word which declares I am in and for you, and refuse to let your mind contradict it. It is eternal truth and no worldly wisdom or circumstance will ever change it.
