362 The Importance of Detail

“It was because you, the Levites, did not bring (the ark) up the first time that the Lord our God broke out in anger against us. We did not enquire of Him about how to do it in the prescribed way” (1 Chronicles 15:13).

The story of David bringing the holy ark back to Jerusalem (chapter 13) always seems unfair and comes as a bit of a shock to our image of You as a loving God, dear Lord. David wanted to do everything right. His heart was to put You back into the religious life of his people. He conferred with all the leaders in his realm and they all agreed it was the right thing to do, even the priests and Levites who should have known what was required. Yet all the joy and rejoicing ended in disaster.

My covenant was made with Abraham’s descendants in order that I might reveal Myself to the whole world through them. They were to be a living illustration of My character: holiness, mercy, wisdom and so on. Every detail had a purpose in that picture, even for you who, all this time later, look to the Scriptures for your spiritual knowledge and guidance. Particularly the details of their place of worship had to reflect the true sanctuary in heaven (Hebrews 9:23,24)

But is it important for us to be so correct? We are part of the new covenant. Hasn’t Christ fulfilled the law on our behalf, a law we could never keep perfectly (Romans 8:3,4)? Surely if our hearts are sincere and we act according to our best knowledge, we are acceptable to You? This story makes me fearful about living my life freely in You.

Is not the God of the old covenant also the God of the new? I have not changed. That you are now the picture of Me that I want shown to the world does not alter My holiness. But those who have a contrite heart and walk humbly with Me (Micah 6:8) can now freely pass through the veil into My presence at any time because atonement has been made (Hebrews 4:16) and I want you to come.  There is no place for fear. You can trust My Spirit to guide and correct you as we walk together.
