366 Beware Legalism

There is an interesting story in 2 Chronicles 24:4-14 (cf 2 Kings 12:4-16). King Joash had in his heart to restore Your temple which had been desecrated during the reign of the evil kings before him. He instructed the Levites to collect the tax that You had established at the time of Moses from each household. But this didn’t work. The money collected didn’t result in much being done to the temple. It must have been frittered away, either through dishonesty or the daily running costs of the priestly class.

Yet when a chest was put into the temple and the people were asked to bring their tax and offerings in voluntarily, that chest kept filling and filling until the work of the temple was complete. Many today are seeking to rebuild Your temple, true worship, in our land. I’m sure there must be a lesson here somewhere for us.

What men enforce will never bring permanent results. Legalism inevitably leads to rebellion. Only that which is built with vision and enthusiasm, freely and gladly, has a lasting effect.

This is true in spiritual matters as in any other. So you want to see the “temple” of godliness and true worship established in your land? It will happen through those who listen to My heart, who obey My voice with joy and abandonment, not counting the cost but trusting only in Me. Do this and you will have a part to play in rebuilding the faith and righteousness you long to see around you.
