370 Freedom is not Lawlessness

“Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, ‘May the Lord, who is good, pardon everyone who sets his heart on seeking God – the Lord, the God of his fathers – even if he is not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary’. And the Lord heard Hezekiah and healed the people” (2 Chronicles 30:18-20).

How often do I hear people say that the God of the Old Testament is not the God of the New. You are accused of being authoritarian, even cruel, ordering the death of whole communities, women and children. But Jesus is different, they say. He is full of grace and truth. Yet those who will read Your Old Covenant with a heart open to truth could not say that. There is so much evidence of Your love and grace right through the Scriptures, and even the destruction of a race that is evil beyond redemption is evidence of that.

This criticism comes from those who do not want law in their life. They want to be able to do things their own way, unwilling to recognise that they do not have the wisdom or power to live in a way that will bring them the fulfilment they seek. It started in the Garden of Eden remember.

I made man, I alone can guide him to the place of true happiness. The law does not hinder you, it guides and protects. The whole universe is based on law. It would disintegrate without it. Certainly things changed outwardly when My Son fulfilled the requirements to remove the barrier of sin between man and Me (Romans 8:3,4), but law did not, could not, disappear. It is no longer on tablets of stone but written on your heart (Romans 2:13-15, 2 Corinthians 3:3). It is the school master that led you to Christ (Galatians 3:24, KJV) and keeps you in that blessed relationship (Proverbs 7:2,3). Without it I could not pour My love and grace upon you.
