372 Prayer that Changes Things

“In his distress Manasseh sought the favour of the Lord his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. And when he prayed to Him, the Lord was moved by his entreaty and listened to his plea…” (2 Chronicles 33:12,13).

I can hardly believe this! What a demonstration of Your grace. This is Manasseh, probably the most evil king in Judah’s history. He deliberately undid all the good his father Hezekiah had done: installing idol worship everywhere, even in the temple; sacrificing his children to Moloch in the fire, consulting spiritualists instead of You, and shedding “so much innocent blood that he filled Jerusalem from end to end” (2 Kings 21:16). Your Word says he created a society that was even more evil than the one You destroyed to give the land to Your people in the first place (2 Chronicles 33:9).

Dates are not given, but I wonder how much of the 55 years of his reign the righteous in the Lord had to live through before his change of heart. How they must have despaired. They probably prayed that he would be removed from ruling over them, which he was (v11). Could they ever have envisaged the turn around in his life?

It is My heart to forgive. I do not want anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9). My Spirit is constantly at work in the lives of men and women. Yes, even that one who you see destroying the moral fabric of your community. How do you pray for him? Does your mind dictate your prayers? Are you motivated by outrage, self righteous judgment, even fear?

Always open your heart and listen to My Spirit when you are praying. Align the authority I have given you with His to bring about My perfect will. Then you will not be wasting your time, but helping to bring My kingdom to the earth.
