376 The Chains of Culture

“A man with leprosy came and knelt before Him and said, ‘Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.’ Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ He said. ‘Be clean!’” (Matthew 8:2,3).

I’ve been thinking a lot about healing, Lord. There is so much sickness all around. We are grateful for the knowledge You have given doctors and scientists. They can do amazing things to bring relief to the suffering. But it is often at a cost, not only financially, but through side effects that bring other problems.

It seems to have been so easy for this man. He’d heard the stories of what Jesus did. He knew that He could heal him. And he had no trouble getting to Him. What a relief it must have been and a boost to his faith to see Jesus did not also back away from him as others did. He was able to come right up to Him, breaking through the chains of the law which forbad him to do so. And his request for healing was immediately granted. Why is it that so many times we don’t experience this?

You too are bound by chains. Chains that have come about because your culture has put its faith in doctors and scientists instead of in Me. Your automatic reaction is to run to medication or treatment for help instead of running to Me as this man did. Your thinking has to be changed, your mind has to be renewed, by adding faith to My Word as you read it (Romans 12:2). I am always available for you to approach Me, and you will always find Me willing to grant My “good, pleasing and perfect will” for your life.
