388 Who is Walking in my Shoes?

“This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him … Since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (1 John 4:9,11)

But this is Your special love, dear Father. We don’t have that in ourselves (v10). So how do we know when we are acting out of our own emotions, or a sense of guilt, or if it is indeed Your Spirit in us who is the source of any concern we have for others? Your love meant willingness to give up Your Son, the dearest thing You had, for us. I can’t commit to do that. I’ve already made too many promises to You that I have not kept.

The “doing” can never be from you, but from My Spirit within you. Once you start trying to do it yourself, you have crossed over into the feeble strength of “phileo” love, brotherly love. It isn’t enough. It hasn’t the wisdom to love in the right way. It is stemmed too easily by fear.

My love will flow through you when your mind and reasoning is out of the way. When you are just walking through life, relaxed in the knowledge you have given Me permission to walk in your shoes and that I will do it. It then comes as a surprise when others recognize love in you of which you were not even aware.

I start to doubt it then. I think, they don’t really know me. I’m a sham, a pretense. I even feel guilt like I have deceived people.

That’s when you know you have stepped back into rational thinking. Watch out for it, and use it as a reminder to give all the thanks and praise to Me. Thus your understanding of what I am doing in you and your confidence will grow stronger.
