390 Real Love is not Warm and Fuzzy

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18).

I have always felt condemned by this section of Scripture which John apparently intended for encouragement. There are so many times that I lapse into unloving thoughts, words and deeds. There seems to be no hope for me.

It is because you still think of love as a feeling, an emotion. I am not an emotion, I am a person, and I am love. But does it always look that way? What about My dealings with My people Israel whom I love deeply and eternally? Has life been easy for them? Whenever they chose to walk in ungodly ways that would destroy them, My love did what was necessary to bring them back into My care and protection (Jeremiah chapter 33). Did Jesus, who was love walking, always appear loving? What about when He confronted those who were destroying others even by their interpretation of My Word (Matthew chapter 23)? Love will do whatever is necessary for those it loves.

But remember, this “perfect” love of which John speaks is never anything to do with you. Its source is always My presence in you. So this is why fear is abolished and you can face the Day of Judgment with confidence (1 John 4:17). My love will never fail to do what is right and good for you.
