294 Sacrifice or Opportunity?

“O Lord Almighty, if You will … not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life” (1 Samuel 1:11).

Reading the book I have from the library at the moment about a woman who had to give up her children in order to follow Your plan for her life, the heartache she endured and the reaction she got from others who did not understand, made me realise some of what Hannah experienced. When you answered her prayer and she held that precious child in her arms, she knew that it was for a short time only. Every day she must have had the knowledge of their impending separation hanging over her, dampening the joy she had.

Yet in obedience she kept her word to You and the rest is history: Samuel became perhaps the greatest prophet of  all time in Israel and kept true to you all the days of his long life. And You gave Hannah five other children on which to lavish her love.

Sacrifice looks so big to us, Lord. It can tear our hearts apart. Yet You indeed make all things work together for good when we dare to obey You (Romans 8:28). Forgive me for being so afraid to trust You and reluctant to obey when You speak.
