295 Knowing and Really Knowing

“Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord. The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him” (1 Samuel 3:7).

I’ve never had children as you know, Lord, so it is very interesting to me to see how Samuel developed. At about 3 years old, when he came to live with Eli in Shiloh he already knew how to worship You (1 Samuel 1:28) and he continued to minister to You through the years (2:11,18,26; 3:1). Yet here we read that he still did not know You personally. Josephus wrote that he was 12 years old by then.

There are degrees of knowing Me. A child can have a very real and precious faith and I will hear their prayers and they can have an assurance of My love for them. Sadly many of My children only know Me in this way all their lives. But their relationship with Me must grow to that point where I can speak to them personally and they will recognise My voice as Samuel eventually did.

How do we get to that point Lord? Surely our hearts yearn for that intimacy with You. Is there any hope for those of us who still have a childlike faith?

What made the difference for Samuel? He put himself in a position to hear Me speak. He lived, worked and slept in My presence (3:3). It is never too late to move into such a relationship with Me. I will come personally to all who are ready to listen to My voice, even as I did for him (3:10).
