296 Leadership

“Eli said, ‘He is the Lord; let Him do what is good in His eyes’” (1 Samuel 3:18).

We do not know what was in Eli’s heart as he spoke these words when Samuel confirmed the message of judgment upon his family.

I see Eli as a godly man, weak, but godly. He knew God’s favour had departed from his family. He must have been grieved by his sons, and broken over his own weakness to discipline them when he could have done it. But he faithfully trained Samuel to serve You. He must have loved Samuel. His own sons were such a disappointment. Surely Samuel gave him hope that a godly person would still be around after his death to lead the people into righteousness. Till the end of his life Eli’s main concern was for the ark (4:13). Why were You so hard on him, Lord?

Eli was Israel’s spiritual leader. There is great responsibility in leadership. A leader represents Me to his people and I am jealous for My name (Joshua 24:19). Remember My holiness and be careful not to take lightly any service I entrust to you.
