206 A Permanent Mark

“Circumcision has value if you observe the law…” (Romans 2:25).

So what value does circumcision have? I know it has health advantages and I guess it is a constant reminder that one belongs to a people in covenant with You. But I’m sure it doesn’t guarantee right standing with You any more than baptism does for the Christian.

You are right, a helpless baby cannot make a choice, and while there are numerous blessings promised in the covenant for My people, there are also conditions on which these blessings depend. These come down to individual choice in maturity. I will no more force those who are Jews to live as the covenant requires that I force non Jews to live righteously.

The covenant given to Abraham was not to do with righteousness. His faith in Me is what had already determined that (Genesis 15:6). It was for personal blessing, perpetuation of his people under My care and rights to the land then known as Canaan (17:1-8). And for these there were conditions: “observe My law”. History has shown that they have not always been fulfilled, hindered by the choices of the people through the centuries. But remember, circumcision is permanent and the day will come when they will be fully verified. And for you, the circumcision of your heart – the cutting away of the inborn bent to sin inherited from your father Adam (Romans 2:29) – is also permanent. You are mine forever.
