312 Family Life

“In Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others” (Romans 12:5).

Belonging! I suppose that is the essence of a family and as Your children, Lord, we are all part of one big family, aren’t we? But I don’t know if it is a good analogy. Families are not always happy together, are they?

No, and that’s because, as different members with different functions, it is easy to think that therefore you don’t belong together. Does the eye need the leg? No, many people get on quite well without one or the other. Particularly in Western society you have grown up with the emphasis on being independent. Find your own identity. Do your own thing. Make your own way in the world. Sound familiar? Those from tribal cultures are different. They are accustomed to seeing themselves as part of a group, and therefore functioning for the betterment of the group rather than themselves as individuals.

That’s what My family is like. Great differences between the members, yet each one has been designed to fit perfectly into the great body of believers who are My ambassadors on earth. As you humbly surrender to My will you are led into that place where you belong, the place for which you were made, not only to provide a healthy functioning body but also deep satisfaction for yourself.
