313 Rulers Good and Bad

“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established” (Romans 13:1).

This surely is one of the hardest passages to accept in Scripture. We just don’t understand why we should submit to evil rulers.

Why is it so hard? Is My wisdom not greater than yours and am I not love? If you are truly My bond slaves (Romans 6:17,18), should you not obey Me without question? Does not the judge of all the earth do right (Genesis 18:25)? I set up the ruling authorities whether evil or good. I use both in My great purpose of establishing the kingdom of righteousness on the earth. Did I not use Pharaoh, the Philistines, the Assyrians, the Babylonians to bring My people back to Me?

But understand, submission is not always equated with obedience. My people are under a higher law, the law of love. Where that conflicts with the ruling authorities, you must obey the law of love. Protests that are legal, warnings of the consequences of ungodly legislation, and especially prayer are the instruments of love. And preparedness to take the consequences which may be meted out to you. My clear command to you is to return good for evil (Romans 12:20,21).

Love is stronger than the sword. It will always triumph. And vengeance is My responsibility, not yours (12:19). Jeremiah stood faithful to Me in declaring My way of truth before rulers (Jeremiah 38:17). Daniel submitted to and blessed the enemies of his people yet stayed faithful to Me throughout his long life (Daniel 6:28). I honoured them and have preserved the record of their life as an example to you. Let love be your guide, not fear.
